From the Rector:
On February 2, we celebrate four chaplains; Rev. George L.
Fox, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Rev. Clark V. Poling and Fr. John P.
Washington. These four men of faith
sailed on the USAT Dorchester, a luxury liner converted to transport US service
men to Europe during World War II (that is the
second war we had to end all wars).
These four men were among 902 young men on their way to the war in
Europe.
The young men in the military were young, very new and inexperienced and
were already frightened by the long trip to Europe through seas that were filled with German
submarines.
The Dorchester was within 150 miles
of Greenland when the captain of the ship was
notified that there were enemy submarines in the area, and he instructed the 902
young soldiers to sleep in their clothes and in their life jackets. Within the ship it was hot and many of the
young men did not heed the captain’s orders.
During the night, the Dorchester was
torpedoed and began to sink. There was
panic throughout the ship and many of the young men who were inside came outside
where the four chaplains were at the storage area handing out life vests to the
soldiers along with prayers and words of encouragement. Many of the young soldiers were trapped
inside the sinking ship as it began to burn and the chaplains went beneath the
deck to give comfort and prayer to those who were so badly injured that they
could not escape and to help those others to find their way to the top deck
where they at least had a chance for survival.
One by one the young soldiers
received life jackets until there were none left to give. The remaining soldiers knew that their time
was at an end. The four chaplains then
calmly took off their life preservers and handed them to four of the remaining
soldiers.
There was confusion on the ship with
life rafts falling into the sea and men falling overboard. During the sinking, the four chaplains prayed
for the soldiers and continued to give words of hope and salvation as the ship
sank with all four chaplains going to their grave. Despite the four chaplains’ best efforts,
only 200 survived to tell the story.
On February 2, please remember the
four chaplains and their sacrifices for the men in their spiritual
care.

God and the
Scientist
God is sitting in heaven when a
scientist says to him, “Lord, we don’t need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to
create life out of nothing. In other
words, we can now do what you did in the beginning.”
“Oh, is that so? Tell me,” replies God.
“Well,” says the scientist, “we can
take dirt and form it into your likeness and breathe life into it, thus creating
man.”
“Well, that’s interesting. Show me.”
So the scientist bends down to the
earth and starts to mold the soil.
“Oh, no, no, no,”
interrupts God. “Get your own
dirt.”
